Burgeron Family Singers Release New Album, “Trailer of Woe”
The Burgeron family released their new album, Trailer of Woe, this month featuring the musical talents of the Headless Inkspots in coordination with the #30daytdc challenge put out to the #DS106 online community by our favorite talking doll, @IamTalkyTina. (Daily Create #tdc1998)
Sure to be a hit is the Title Track, “Trailer of Woe”, featuring the musical talents of the Headless Inkspots: Viv Rolfe and David Kernohan. You can learn more about the fascinating history of the making of the “Trailer of Woe” here.

Festival Finale ala Hurricane Hans
This just in…..
The Bovine County Fairy Tale Festival final two weeks have been canceled due to a severe weather event expected to hit Bovine County full force in a week or two. [Can you say global climate change boys and girls?]
The festival organizers and I have been carefully monitoring Tropical Depression Hans as it continues to build steam. It has been reclassified as a Class 4 hurricane and is expected to reach the Texas coast next week. Climatologist are predicting floods not seen in this area since the great floods of 1957.
In order to protect festival goers we made the only decision we could – to cancel the final two weeks of fairy tale workshops, Middle Earth and Music Mania, to allow everyone to find safety and shelter out-of-the-way of the destructive storm’s path. There are a few hardy souls in the Burgeron Family who have been granted permission to stay through the end of August to prepare the Burgeron place for Hurricane Hans, as there is concern that the Trailer will up and float off.
But all work and no play isn’t good for anyone, and I’m not going to miss/forget my birthday again this year! So we’ve been working with Rockylou Radio Productions to host a #burgeron106/#prisoner106 radio show that will bring down the final curtain for Summer 2015. Resident artists are encouraged to create and submit solo and/or collaborative audio from the safety of their homes. Dr. M has already been recruiting Burgeron Family members and Prisoner106 Village residents to create a new fairy tale. A radio show for all artists in residence is scheduled to air on Monday, August 31st.

The fairy tales and legends of olden China have in common with the “Thousand and One Nights” an oriental glow and glitter of precious stones and gold and multicolored silks, an oriental wealth of fantastic and supernatural action. And yet they strike an exotic note distinct in itself. The seventy-three stories here presented after original sources, embracing “Nursery Fairy Tales,” “Legends of the Gods,” “Tales of Saints and Magicians,” “Nature and Animal Tales,” “Ghost Stories,” “Historic Fairy Tales,” and “Literary Fairy Tales,” probably represent the most comprehensive and varied collection of oriental fairy tales ever made available for American readers. There is no child who will not enjoy their novel color, their fantastic beauty, their infinite variety of subject.
Yet, like the “Arabian Nights,” they will amply repay the attention of the older reader as well. Some are exquisitely poetic, such as “The Flower-Elves,” “The Lady of the Moon” or “The Herd Boy and the Weaving Maiden”; others like “How Three Heroes Came By Their Deaths Because Of Two Peaches,” carry us back dramatically and powerfully to the Chinese age of Chivalry. The summits of fantasy are scaled in the quasi-religious dramas of “The Ape Sun Wu Kung” and “Notscha,” or the weird sorceries unfolded in “The Kindly Magician.” Delightful ghost stories, with happy endings, such as “A Night on the Battlefield” and “The Ghost Who Was Foiled,” are paralleled with such idyllic love-tales as that of “Rose of Evening,” or such Lilliputian fancies as “The King of the Ants” and “The Little Hunting Dog.” It is quite safe to say that these Chinese fairy tales will give equal pleasure to the old as well as the young. They have been retold simply, with no changes in style or expression beyond such details of presentation which differences between oriental and occidental viewpoints at times compel. It is the writer’s hope that others may take as much pleasure in reading them as he did in their translation.

This little volume of Chinese fairy tales has been written by Dr. Herbert A. Giles, Professor of Chinese in the University of Cambridge, formerly British Consul at Ningpo China, and for twenty-six years resident in that country. It is intended as a companion to the Japanese fairy tales published in the same series.It is very interesting to compare the tales in the two volumes. They are equally quaint and delightful, but the national spirit of the Chinese is very different from that of the Japanese, both being reflected in the stories in a thoroughly characteristic manner.A. These Tibetan Folk Tales were collected by Albert Shelton, a doctor and explorer who lived in Tibet for two decades in the early 20th century; he died there in 1922, and his wife published this book in 1925 based on his notes. You will find Buddhist legends here, along with traditional stories of Tibetan gods and goddesses, as well as magicians and wonder-workers. There are stories of ghosts and demons, plus many animal stories, including animal tricksters like the frog who is able to trick a tiger, or the rabbit who is able to trick a lion. There are fairy-tale stories, too, along with stories of human drama, both comical and tragic. Each of the stories is prefaced by a Tibetan proverb, and there are lovely illustrations for many of the stories, as you can see here in the first story when the frog confronts the tiger.”

What Do Fairy Tales Teach Our Children?

Today’s “fairy tales” are usually referring to the cleansed, safe versions found in Disney-trademarked stories that are filled with enchanted forests, singing birds, and happy endings. Many have no idea that traditional fairy tales, particularly the Grimm variety, fully intended to both frighten and instruct children in the harsh realities of life.
Some believe they should be banished. While others say that we should return to telling the stories as the Grimms and old lore told them — as warnings and morality tales. [Above excerpt adapted from the linked post.]

Gender Not An Issue in Bovine
There have been some quizzical faces around Bovine County lately. It’s well known here that the #Burgeron106 family and community are open, tolerant and inviting as a way of life. Things like gender, socio-economic status, political ideology, age, nationality, education, profession, marital status, and even species and state of aliveness (Mama & Little Boo) just aren’t issues with us. This openness to alternative ways of being in the world can cause confusion and misunderstanding for others outside the family who don’t live here, but have just dropped by for an event or an occasional visit.
Take for example last week when it was reported that SuperMoo was smitten with Anna Cow. To those of us who know that SuperMoo is a transgender bovine, there is no issue. She was seen running in the woods last summer and most recently he was head-over-hooves in love with Anna Cow. While not a big issue for us, it can still be confusing. What pronoun should be used with a transgender being? Even the human transgender community has yet to come to complete consensus on the matter.
The AP Stylebook, the most widely used by journalists and editors, encourages writers to “use the pronoun preferred by the individuals who have acquired the physical characteristics of the opposite sex or present themselves in a way that does not correspond with their sex at birth.
“If that preference is not expressed,” the Stylebook continues, “Use the pronoun consistent with the way the individuals live publicly.”
That’s all well and good if gender identities are clearly visible & identifiable. But in the case of our SuperMoo, whose superhero alter-ego conventions only add to the confusion, we do not see clearly definable gender characteristics. SuperMoo is on most occasions sporting an androgynous style.

Tips & Resources for Allies of Transgender Beings
The following are tips that can be used as you move toward becoming a better ally to transgender beings.
- You can’t tell if someone is transgender just by looking.
- Don’t make assumptions about a transgender being’s sexual orientation.
- If you don’t know what pronouns to use, listen first.
- Don’t ask a transgender being what their “real name” is.
- Respect the terminology a transgender being uses to describe their identity.

What’s the difference between Hans & the Grimm Brothers? Unlike the Brothers Grimm, who were academics and lawyers and were initially collecting stories as a part of their linguistics research, Hans Christian Andersen was an entertainer and wrote his own original tales.
“His initial attempts at writing fairy tales were revisions of stories that he heard as a child. Andersen then brought this genre to a new level by writing a vast number of fairy tales that were both bold and original. Initially they were not met with recognition, due partly to the difficulty in translating them and capturing his genius for humor and dark pathos.”
Sound familiar? It’s not our writing, it’s the reader’s difficulty in capturing our genius for humor and dark pathos. 😉 Take a crack at it. Write your own fairy tales this week.

NanaLou’s Digital Fridge
As a kid having your prized #Burgeron106 art projects posted onto NanaLou’s refrigerator meant it was “real” art. I’ve always been oh so proud of my family’s creative masterpieces – no matter what their age. But these days things are different. How can a refrigerator magnet attach an audio or video file? Or, heaven forbid, an interactive digital media project? Ol’ NanaLou has figured it out with my new “digital fridge” that can display any of my family’s art projects. Simply click an image on the fridge door to find out more.

NOTE: For an optimal user experience, use a computer rather than a mobile device to interact with my digital fridge door.
The hardest part about making this digital refrigerator door with the image mapper software was (through trial and error) figuring out I needed to make my original image 600px wide. Anything bigger than that wouldn’t map correctly when it was actually displayed on our blog.
